Later Years
"This Stone was placed here by Horace King. In lasting remembrance of the love and gratitude he felt for his lost friend and former master." Horace King, Words on John Godwin Memorial, 1859. King not only took responsibility for himself, but also for others. Toward the end of John Godwin’s life, he was deep in debt and King likely provided him and his family with money and support. In a final act of responsibility and appreciation and "to leave a permanent memorial of his friendship for John Godwin, Horace King bought a marble monument for John Godwin's grave. He paid nearly $300 for it, a large price at that time" (Gibbons, Faye. Horace King: Bridges to Freedom, 2002). |
